BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:15 P.M.) – Harare’s streets appeared peaceful, Wednesday, amid the presence of military vehicles.
President Robert Mugabe has been placed under house arrest in the capital, according to South African President Jacob Zuma. His detention comes after Zimbabwe’s military seized control of state TV, announcing it had taken temporary control of the country in order to “target criminals” allegedly operating around the head of state.
A military representative said earlier, “this is not a military takeover,” speaking on state TV in Harare. He explained the army’s moves instead as an attempt to “pacify a degenerating political, social and economic situation” in the country.
