US President Donald Trump hailed his ‘America First’ policy during an unannounced Christmas visit of US troops stationed at the al-Asad Air Base in the western Iraqi al-Anbar Governorate on Wednesday.
“America shouldn’t be doing the fighting for every nation on earth, not being reimbursed in many cases at all. If they want us to do the fighting, they also have to pay a price and sometimes that’s also a monetary price,” Trump said, asking for monetary compensation in return for US military deployment.
“We’re no longer the suckers, folks, and people are not looking at us as suckers,” Trump added.
Trump, who was joined by First Lady Melania during his surprise visit, thanked the servicemen for the “near-elimination of the ISIS territorial caliphate in Iraq and in Syria” as he re-confirmed plans for a “strong, deliberate, and orderly withdrawal of US forces from Syria.”
Trump also noted that Saudi Arabia “has already made a commitment of substantial funds for development and President Erdogan of Turkey has also agreed to take out any remnants of ISIS.”
Trump went on to say that the United States would maintain a presence in Iraq “to prevent an ISIS resurgence… and also to watch over Iran.”
“We’re putting America first for the first time in a long time, longer than anyone can remember,” Trump concluded.
