BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:00 P.M.) – The Russian and U.S. air forces had a brief encounter last week as an American spy plane was spotted by an RAF fighter jet near its border.

According to Russia Today, a Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a U.S. RC-135 spy plane that was flying close to its border.

The Russian Ministry of Defense then released a statement after the interception further confirming the incident:

Russian means of airspace control detected an air target approaching the State border of the Russian Federation over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea.

A Su-27 fighter jet on duty scrambled to intercept the target. The crew of the Russian fighter approached a safe distance to the air object and identified it as a RS-135 spy airplane of the US Air Force.

After it left the Russian air border of Russia, the Su-27 from the air defense duty force returned to the home airfield.

As shown in the brief video below, the Su-27 manages to intercept the U.S. spy plane before the latter veers off to the right:

This is no “incident”, there is not even scramble, not even interception (which means destruction of the intercepted aircraft), this is routine flights on both sides 🙂
