DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:38 P.M.) – The Israeli regimes ‘defence minister’ Avigdor Liberman has just upgraded the status of the illegal Israeli settlers in Hebron to make them part of an official settlement. As this was announced settlers in Hebron went into a frenzy assaulting local Palestinians, burning Palestinian land, shouting insults at the Islamic faith as well as threatening women with sexual violence.
Liberman stated that “this is another important step in normalizing the lives of the Jews in Hebron, in particular, and in all of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), in general.”
All West Bank settlements are illegal under international law and run in violation of 3 specific United Nations resolutions. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t consider this however when earlier this year he issued some of the largest settlement expansion plans in recent years as well as announcing in a speech earlier this week that “we are here to stay” in reference to settlements in the West Bank.
Netanyahu vows to never end the settlement program and that no settlers will be withdrawn by the Israeli state. With the constant expansion of settlements and moves like the recent one in Hebron, it seems that the Likud party are more than serious with their allegations and aim to cater to Israels population of right wingers who they have recently lost favour with over being too moderate.
This all comes at a time when UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres makes his visit to Palestine/Israel.
Perhaps he will ignore this or maybe he will react to what seems like blatant disrespect on part of the Israelis, most likely over recent United Nation condemnation of Israeli policies and an aid package of 2.4 million USD to Gaza in order to help the humanitarian catastrophe caused by Israel’s restrictions of the electrical supply.
In July, the UN Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization registered Hebron’s old town and the Tomb of the Patriarchs as part of the state of Palestine’s world heritage list, so it seem clear what the conotations attached to this new move by the Israelis – to normalise the illegal presence of almost 1000 settlers (most of whom live in the old city) – is.
Settler violence has also escalated by 88% this year towards the Palestinians, there are currently over 600,000 settlers illegally living in cities established on West Bank land.
