BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:20 P.M.) – Following the rapid liberation of Al-Qaryatayn in central Homs province yesterday by pro-government forces, amateur footage taken by Syrian troops has begun to emerge show-casing their presence in the oasis town.
Al-Qaryatayn was seized by ISIS on October 1 after Islamic State sleeper cells operating from nearby villages combined ranks and entered the town. Being so far behind government-lines, the army’s presence in the area was very scarce and the jihadists succeeded in physically occupying the town.
Almost one week ago, pro-government forces – namely the Syrian Arab Army and the National Defence Forces – launched a power offensive to retake the Al-Qaryatayn. After several days of battle, pro-government forces succeeded in capturing the town’s farming area and all of the high-ground around it, creating ideal conditions to storm the main districts.
