DAMASCUS, SYRIA (4:35 P.M.) – An armed drone sent by rebels in northern Latakia was shot down by Russian anti-aircraft missiles before reaching its target in the strategic Hmaymim Airbase as Russia continues military support for the Syrian Army countrywide.
The failed attack was launched to disturb the Russian forces in the coastal base and inflict as much damage as possible on fighter jets and equipment.
Militants stationed in the far northern countryside of Latakia have repeatedly attacked the Russian forces in Hmaymim. In its first drone attack, rebels managed to damage several warplanes before the Russians upgrade the anti-air defense systems to avert future attacks.
Yesterday’s onslaught was successfully foiled with all weaponized drones downed; some even a few kilometers away from the base.
Raw footage posted on social media shows a group of Syrian soldiers loading a downed drone on a truck near Qardaha city.
Meanwhile, the Russian jets continue to propel the Syrian forces by conducting effective airstrikes against rebel positions in several front-lines across the country.
