Video footage has been released, showing the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) elite Republican Guard advancing against ISIS in Deir Ezzour city.

The Syrian Army, backed by local militiamen, managed to liberate the Alloush hill, paving the way for pro-government forces to lift the siege on the airbase.

The video, which is around 2 minutes long, shows the Syrian Army using tanks and artillery to shell ISIS positions. The footage also shows troops firing at ISIS militants with light-machine guns (LMGs) and assault rifles.

I don’t understand why the advance has been so slow. The fighting in the cemetery has been going on for two whole months and there has been little progress. The SAA certainly can recruit the numbers (100,000 fearing genocide still stuck in the city) and has a large amount of armour in the pocket, so why don’t they just spearhead an armoured offensive with Close Air Support from Russia as well as carpet bombings to just pummel ISIS?
