BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:50 P.M.) – Members of Russia’s State Duma and members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) arrived in Damascus on Monday.
This came ahead of a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, and joint talks between Russian and Syrian parliamentarians.
Leonid Slutski, Russian State Duma Deputy said in Russian that: “We are going to show them the Russian Centre for reconciliation of opposing sides, which has achieved tremendous success in the diplomatic sphere, which is not typical for a defence establishment.”
“The Russian defence minister is not only providing peace but also conducting serious work in promoting the ceasefire regime as well as real and broad-scale reconciliation in Syria,” he continued.
“Europe has to be aware of that and of what is happening in Syria based on real information rather than compilations from Western media,” he added.
“Of course together with the Syrian government and European parliamentarians we will discuss a new constitution, as well as the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, prisoner exchanges, a possibility to create national autonomies without which we don’t see a chance for reconciliation,” he concluded.
