An aircraft wing consisting of Su-24 jets and the personnel of special task medical detachments prepared to leave Hmeymim airbase in Latakia, on Tuesday, as Russia continued to reduce its military presence in Syria, Ruptly said on its YouTube channel.

The withdrawal of certain aircraft’s does not mean an end to Russia’s intervention in the Syrian War, but rather a removal of units that are no longer needed or necessary.

The Russian military intervention in Syria began in September, 2015.

FAB timing, in the middle of the DeZ crisis.
Even if Su 24 have poor accuracy operating above MANPAD height
they could help now.

Was the Su-24 ever, really, the right platform for this campaign?
Debatable, but I say not.
This was a classic Su-25 arena. Of course, the unwise decision to not establish a more centrally located forward airbase, such as at Abu ad Duhur or Al Tabqah, increased tactical ranges and TOTs, thus diminishing potential Su-25 effectiveness. Unfortunately, RuAf and SAAF (armed forces, not air force) have taken a “Hamburger Hill” approach in this conflict. I guess those PGMs are just too expensive.

“I guess those PGMs are just too expensive.” =>SVP-24 targetting system on Su-24 last upgrades are near as accurate than 1st JDAM/GBU generation with old iron bombs “Was the Su-24 ever, really, the right platform for this campaign? This was a classic Su-25 arena.” => Not even the Su-25… As I already explained, you need long loitering time and ability to f**k up many targets for sure… Perfect fit would be – OV-10 but a little bigger, 30mm/3-5k RPM belly turret+2k to 3k rounds, 6 rocket pods with smth like LOGIR guidance kits (especially for… Read more »

its just a standard rotation of troops and aircraft and crews, su24s leave, su-25s arrived . Russia using Syria as one big training ground for aircraft pilots and ground crews. also makes sense not to use up 2 many flight hours on any given airframe
