DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:45 A.M.) – On Friday, the Philippine Air Force launched dozens of fresh sorties over the embattled city of Marawi amid a wider bid to defeat Abu Sayyaf and Maute militants, two jihadist groups that have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State.

Over four months since the ISIS-inspired insurgency began in the southern Philippines, dozens of entrenched jihadist fighters refuse to buckle despite facing artillery strikes, air raids, firefights and sniper shootouts with the Philippine Armed Forces on a daily basis.

Brand new footage released by Amaq Agency shows airstrikes landing inches from Islamic State hideouts across the city centre:

On Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte said he hoped the crisis in Marawi would be resolved in one week while the military makes its final push to liberate the strife-torn Islamic city.

According to government officials, 777 ISIS members have been killed in the skirmishes that first erupted on May 23. At least 159 government troops and 47 civilians have also lost their lives during the battle.

Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree

You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But remember to criticize ideas, not people. Please avoid:

  • Name-calling
  • Ad hominem attacks
  • Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content
  • Knee-jerk contradiction

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.
