DAMASCUS, SYRIA (4:50 P.M.) – Scores of rebel fighters in southwest Syria have turned themselves in to the Syrian authorities as the Syrian Army continues to gain ground in several areas of Daraa province.
The surrendered rebels, mostly FSA affiliated, went through days-long negotiations with the Syrian government mediated by Russia in order to reconcile after turning themselves in and handing over all their weapons.
The handed-over weapons include 2 pickup trucks, 2 heavy caliber machineguns and scores of assault rifles and hand grenades.
The Syrian Army has taken over the entire Lajat areas – where militants surrendered – last week following intense battles with jihadists.
Meanwhile, several towns and villages in Daraa have fallen to the Syrian Army as part of a wider military campaign to retake all insurgent-controlled territories in southwest Syria.
