DAMASCUS, SYRIA (8:15 A.M.) – The Kurdish rebel group PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) has released footage of a surprise attack carried out on a Turkish army base in the Herekol region of the Siirt province in south-eastern Turkey. While the ambush took place on July 26, the video has only now been published by pro-PKK website Gerila TV.
The footage shows a surveillance action on a Turkish emplacement turning violent, as PKK guerillas attack the Turkish camp from several sides, eventually overtaking the hillside.
According to the PKK, 9 Turkish soldiers were killed in the attack, as well as 1 PKK fighter. The Kurdish guerilla movement also seized several pieces of equipment from the captured emplacements. The Turkish army reportedly responded to the attack by shelling the area with mortar and howitzer fire.
The Kurdish conflict has claimed over 40.000 lives ever since the start of hostilities in 1984. Recent developments in Syria, where Kurdish militias control vast areas of territory, have made tensions in Turkish Kurdistan flare up in full ferocity.
