BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:19 P.M.) – The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano in Moscow on Monday.
The discussion focussed on bilateral relations as well as current international issues.
“We appreciate Italy’s special role in Russia’s system of foreign contacts which is based on a strong tradition of bilateral relations and successful experience of cooperation in various fields,” Lavrov said.
“Despite certain circumstances, an active political dialogue between our countries has been developing in recent years, including at the highest level, inter-parliamentary cooperation, cooperation through ministries and departments, including foreign-policy departments,” Lavrov continued.
Alfano reiterated the same friendly rhetoric by stating: “We have a long history of relations between our countries. The story that has resisted and passed through very difficult geopolitical moments in recent years and decades, in which we were able to maintain excellent bilateral relations, despite great historical difficulties.”
“Previous energy arrangements between Russia and Italy occurred at a very difficult time in international relations. And still Russia for Italy is the most reliable partner in the energy sector, and Italy for Russia is an excellent customer,” he continued.
