The situation in Deir Ezzor remains dire for the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) as entrenched government forces find themselves forced to fend off daily ISIS attacks with little hope of liberation on its way.

In fact, the closest SAA troops at Palmyra are stationed some 160 kilometers west of the government-held Deir Ezzor enclave while the SAA’s Military High Command seems increasingly focused on retaking Aleppo and Damascus.

Despite suffering serious setbacks across Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State is keen to retake Deir Ezzor and score a symbolic victory for the self-proclaimed caliphate.

On Thursday evening, Amaq Agency released footage of ISIS fighters firing upon SAA positions inside the urban city of Deir Ezzor. The footage is available below:

The latest battle map from the city can be seen here.

The only way they’ll be able to hold out for enough time is if the Russian airstrikes continue around Deir Ez-zor. This needs to happen.

But why is Russia fighting in Syria? The Russians should protect their own borders and not intervene in foreign countries like they did in Ukraine, Georgia and other countries.

I fully agree with you on Ukraine and Georgia. But in regards to Syria Russia have been given permission and asked by Assad to intervene.

A Rússia está lutando na Síria por causa de sua base militar em latakia por causa de contratos de reconstrução na Síria, quando a guerra acabou, onde a Rússia terá vários lucros e evitar o pipeline Qatar-Europa.

1st : Russia is a traditional ally to Syria for decades. 2nd : Russia has a navy base, it’s the only one they kept in Mediterranean sea. 3rd : It’s not Russian interest to let the Qatar/KSA/Turkey pipeline happen or else it will compete Russian energy sales to EU. 4th : Syrian govt asked Russia for help. In Ukraine’s Donbass and Crimea, the biggest part of population is simply Russian, so was it where Russia intervened in Georgia. These Russians were simply under threat by the local regime. Moreover, the coup in Ukraine has put the use of Russian navy… Read more »

You’re right expect for the “biggest population is Russian”. That is correct for Crimea, but not for eastern Ukraine.

How easy it is for you to sort up russians! One my grandpa was russian while other was ukrainian. My older brother is ukrainian and myself is russian. Does it makes sense to you? I doubt. Meanwhile it is easy. We are all Russians naturally, by blood. But some of us with the great russia (idealists and moralists now) while others are pro-western/pro-jewish/pro-american (materialists now). And thus it is way to separate. The majority of Donbass are with russia while others are pro-western or oppressed by Kiev’s special services under western patronage. The difference between Crimea and Donbass choice is… Read more »

Stalingrad did not suppose bad managing. Rad army had captivated hundreds thousands of germans when those retreated very next months. Deir Ezzor is in bad hands (Damascus generals’).
