DAMASCUS, SYRIA (8:15 P.M.) – Dozens of soldiers and insurgents alike were killed in the eastern Damascus suburbs on Saturday as both sides tried to win the upper hand with no decisive outcome for the time being.
With heavy clashes taking place in both Jobar and Ayn Tarma, the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) Failaq Al-Rahman deployed its best fighters in trenches, sniper positions and door-to-door combat to repel the juggernaut of the 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard.
Footage of clashes in the by now contested Ayn Tarma district from Saturday, depicting the ongoing battle from the FSA’s side of events:
Failaq Al-Rahman is also relying heavily on its so-called hell cannons, shelling positions rearguard positions held by the Republican Guards. Footage of artillery and mortar guns opening fire on government troops in Jobar and Ayn Tarma.
On the other hand, dozens of government airstrikes struck suspected insurgent positions. Thousands of civilians have fled the east Damascus fighting which has intensified significantly over the past week.
The FSA is fighting side-by-side with Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), considered Al-Qaeda’s tacit franchise group in Syria. However, HTS has not published footage from Jobar nor Ayn Tarma over the last week, thereby indicating they may be using the FSA as frontline cannon fodder.
