BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:00 P.M.) –The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) scored a symbolic victory in Deir Ezzor yesterday as a succesful counter-attack in the cemetery area neutralized tens of ISIS militants.

Meanwhile, ISIS also claimed to have killed 14 SAA soldiers, thereby signifying the intensity of the clashes in the besieged eastern city.
The cemetery area is highly strategic as it lies between two SAA pockets; namely, Deir Ezzor Airbase and government-held districts of Deir Ezzor city.
Syrian troops, led by Major General Issam Zahreddine, must advance roughly 2 kilometers along the adjacent Saeed Street (M4 Highway) if they are to link up the two besieged government areas.
Thousands of jihadist fighters have been killed in the battle for Deir Ezzor over the past three years while the SAA is yet to raise the white flag despite a precarious military and humanitarian situation.
