The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and allied units continued pushing towards Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL)-held Deir ez-Zor, Monday.
Damascus-aligned forces also reportedly liberated the strategic town of Kabawjib in western Deir Ezzor Governorate, Monday. Government units were seen engaged in combat close to Kabawjib and within around 15 kilometres (9.32 miles) of Kabawjib that same day.
SAA forces had advanced with tanks and helicopters, pushing IS militants back towards Deir ez-Zor over the weekend.
The city has been under siege by IS since the group launched an offensive on the city in May 2015. Some 125,000 civilians reportedly live in the city under dire humanitarian conditions.
