BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:40 P.M.) – A motorized regiment of an elite Syrian military detachment has been sent to the front-lines in southeastern Idlib to bolster army forces for a major operational against armed Islamist militias.
An entire heavy machine gun regiment belonging to the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Directorate is being sent to reinforce Syrian Arab Army units currently battling it out against armed rebel groups in Idlib province’s southeastern countryside.
The regiment comprises many dozens of armed pickups (commonly referred technicals) that have been outfitted with heavy machine guns. The unit’s role is back up infantry assaults by providing close fire support for storming troops.
To this end, it is understood that the Syrian Army is planning a new operation to fully drive back all the gains made by Islamist militias against the western flank of its advance into Idlib.
Soldiers within the ranks of the heavy machine gun regiment released a promotional video (available at the end of this article) of their journey to Idlib, showcasing the equipment which they will use on the battlefield.
