BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:42 P.M.) – As the battle for Jobar rages on and with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) making a successful advance in the Ayn Tarma district today, militants of the Faylaq al-Rahman Islamist faction are now throwing up a screen of concentrated mortar fire against Syrian troops in order to stave of any further advances near and beyond the M-5 Highway overpass.
In the video, Faylaq al-Rahman rebels can be seen employing a range of improvised and standard mortar types ranging from heavy hell canons to medium 81 mm trench designs.
Beyond recording the firing of their mortars, the militants also film the resulting barrage. Based on the footage, it is quite clear that the Islamists are targeting the positions and movements of SAA soldiers in the area of the M-5 Highway overpass.
Open road areas – particularly roundabouts and junctions – are extremely hazardous for the movement of troops. Snipers, mortars and machine guns all make ideal weapons for turning such areas into kill-zones.
In the case of this video, fighters of Faylaq al-Rahman are attempting to both suppress the movement of the SAA across the overpass and spoil its newly-established positions near it.
