The US guided missile destroyer, USS Nitze, was allegedly intercepted by four Iranian Revolution Guard boats on Tuesday near the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, U.S. military officials said today.
Following several attempts to communicate with the lurking Iranian military boats, the US warship redirected its travel route in order to avoid any confrontation.
According to US military officials, the USS Nitze attempted to contact the Iranian boats a dozen times after two of the vessels began to speed towards the US ship.
The Iranian boats came as close as 300 yards of the USS Nitze before the latter changed the course of its travel, US official added.
The conduct of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was called “unprofessional” by the U.S. military officials, who later claimed they were “harassed” in the Persian Gulf.
