BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:00 A.M.) – A U.S. spy plane allegedly approached the Russian airbase in western Syria on Thursday before disappearing off the Levantine country’s coast, Avia.Pro reported.

According to the Avia.Pro report, a U.S. P-8A Poseidon approached the Hmeimim Airbase from its western flank, but the aircraft would turn away before reaching the Syrian coast.

The publication said the aircraft was likely conducting a reconnaissance mission off the coast of Latakia

“We cannot exclude the possibility that the crew of the Boeing P-8A Poseidon decided on some kind of cunning plan, which can be really confusing since visually the route of its flight did not go along the coast of Syria. However, it is not known where the American military aircraft spent the remaining hour,” a military expert told Avia.Pro.

U.S. P-8A spy planes are often spotted in the eastern Mediterranean; however, they very rarely cross into Syrian airspace.

In fact, P-8 is more an MarPat/ASM/ASUW asset than a spy-plane, even if it has some devices to do some limited ELINT/SIGINT/COMINT, it’s not a spy-plane, it’s filled with anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, sonar-buoys… In fact, they may even have came into Syrian airspace on Russia’s demand in order to use their sensors to detect some cyphered jihadi communications in ranges the Russians cryptographers have a hard time to decypher… At the present day, the P-8 are essentially monitoring Turkish naval activities around Cyprus especially since the Turks have said their drill-ships who are violating EU’s EEZ are escorted by submarines,… Read more »
