BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:00 P.M.) – The U.S. envoy to Syria James Jeffery told reporters on Wednesday that he hopes Russia will continue to allow Israel the freedom to attack Iranian targets in Syria.
“In the past Russia has been permissive in consultation with the Israelis about Israeli strikes against Iranian targets inside Syria,” Jeffery stated.
“We certainly hope that that permissive approach will continue,” he said in a telephone conversation with reporters.
The U.S. diplomat’s comments come just 45 days after a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance was downed off the coast of Syria’s Latakia province.
Jeffery also told the journalists that the U.S. is going to step up their efforts to force Iran out of Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
The U.S. diplomat said that countering Iran’s regional influence is part of the U.S.’ ongoing efforts to weaken Iran.
