BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:50 P.M.) – The U.S. military is still training Syrian rebels at their base in Jordan, the spokesman for the Al-Umari Brigade said on Saturday, as quoted by the Smart News Agency.
Despite some rumors that the U.S. had completely scrapped this program, it appears they will continue training Syrian rebel groups to fight the Islamic State.
However, the U.S. has made it clear they are not committed to training or aiding rebel groups in their fight against the Syrian government and their allies in southern Syria.
As a result of the U.S.’ position, many rebel factions have quit the Anti-ISIL Coalition, citing Washington’s refusal to support their fight against the Syrian government as the primary reason for their discontent.
In response to the U.S.’ position, several rebel groups in southern Syria have formed a coalition of their own that is dedicated to fighting the Syrian government and their allies.
This new rebel coalition will not receive any support from the U.S. or Jordan, as its primary focus is not to fight the Islamic State.
