BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:00 A.M.) – The Syrian government and US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reached an agreement to jointly run the Tabqa Dam in western Al-Raqqa, the Rudaw News Agency reported on Friday.
Citing a member of the local administration of Tabqa, Rudaw reported that the agreement was recently made and could pave the way for future cooperation between the Syrian government and Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Syria.
“There is cooperation in this case because the dam belongs to all Syrians,” said Hamid al-Faraj, co-chair of the legislative branch of Tabqa’s civil administration.
The Tabqa Dam was captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces during their large-scale offensive in western Al-Raqqa in 2017.
It was previously under the occupation of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) from 2014-2017.
