BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:20 P.M.) – The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) scored another big advance inside the Deir Ezzor Governorate, today, seizing nearly 5km of territory between their previous positions and the Euphrates River.
Among the sites captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces on Sunday was the strategic mountaintop of Jabal Baghouz, which overlooks the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
The Syrian Democratic Forces are now attempting to clear this Islamic State pocket near Albukamal.
Should ISIS lose this pocket near the border-city of Albukamal, they will no longer have access to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
For the SDF, capturing this large ISIS pocket would be a major victory for them, as it would strengthen their positions near Albukamal, while securing the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
