The predominantly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by US airstrikes, continues its military operation to seize the ISIS-held city of Manbij in northern Syria.
The US-backed fighters have allegedly cut off the Manbij-Aleppo highway, thus encircling the Islamic State bastion and effectively cutting off the final ISIS supply line to the city.
Pro-Kurdish media accounts reported that the ISIS Emir of Manbij, Usama al-Tunisi, was killed inside the city during today’s offensive. Whether the Emir was killed in clashes or by an airstrike was not immediately apparent.
In May 24, the Kurdish-led SDF launched a wide-scale offensive to capture ISIS de facto capital of Raqqa. However, the forces headed westward and crossed the Euphrates in bid to oust the terror group from Manbij, located nearly 70 km to the northeast of Aleppo.
