BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:45 P.M.) – For the first time since the end of the Vietnam War over 40 years ago, a United States aircraft carrier docked in a Vietnamese port, close to the major coastal city of Danang on Tuesday.
US warships have made port calls to Vietnam before, although the visit of USS Carl Vinson is the first by an aircraft carrier in over 40 years.
US Defence Secretary General Jim Mattis met with Vietnamese Defence Minister Ngo Xuan Lich during the trip, which is aimed at bolstering ties between the two countries’ navies.
