Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova held her weekly news briefing in Moscow on Friday, discussing topics including the Syrian crisis, communication with the USA and the social media censorship in the West.
She stated that Washington fails to see what Moscow’s goal is and has been in Syria, blaming the US for trying to “counter” Russia’s efforts to create peace in the country.
The spokesperson also mentioned the militant attack against Russia’s Khmeimim airbase in Syria on Dec 31.
“Where did the terrorists get these completely new means of warfare and why these means appear now when it is clear for everyone the Syrian political stabilisation trends are strengthening?” she asked, addressing her question to Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Satterfield in search for an answer.
She further went on to discuss Western countries’ urge to battle “fake news”, claiming that some nations, particularly Germany and the UK, are limiting freedom of speech by imposing elements of censorship on social networks.
