BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:05 A.M.) – The Syrian Army and National Defence Forces have seized a desert town from Islamic State militants in the country’s eastern province of Deir Ezzor amid a new operation against the terrorist group’s lingering presence across the region.
According to military-affiliated sources, the Syrian Army, backed up by local forces, captured the town of Faydah Aj-Jubb, located to the west of the Euphrates city of Al-Mayadeen (under government control).
According to Al-Masdar News journalist Ibrahim Joudeh, the Syrian Army plans to bring a complete end to the ISIS insurgency in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor province by physically clearing the area (several thousand square kilometers in size) with troops and armor.
It is yet to be seen just how considerable the Islamic State presence in western Deir Ezzor is; the ferocity of the terrorist group’s latest attacks on government-held bases and cites across the province has led some analysts to the conclusion that up to one thousand militants still roam its desert hills and canyons.
