BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:39 P.M.) – The Russian Ministry of Defence has confirmed from its end breaking reports that Syrian rebel fighters of Jaysh al-Islam currently holding out in the city of Douma in Damascus’ East Ghouta region have agreed to evacuate towards other insurgent-controlled areas of the country.
With the Russian MoD being the first official source to confirm that the an agreement has been reached makes it apparent that Russian mediators have played a key role in the evacuation negotiations.
Jaysh al-Islam militants in Douma represent the last rebel bastion standing in East Ghouta following a one-month military operation by the Syrian Army which has seen the capitulation of tens of insurgent-controlled districts and towns across the region.
It is still not entirely clear where the Islamist faction’s fighters are to be evacuated to. Sources believe one of two locations where allied militias are present are possible – either the eastern Qalamoun mountains or Daraa province.
