BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:20 P.M.) – The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday, that a group of its Su-27 fighters intercepted American bombers and NATO reconnaissance aircraft over the international waters of the Baltic Sea.
The ministry said, “On June 15, 2020, the air defense forces in the Western Military Circle monitored the movements of B-52H strategic bombers and foreign reconnaissance planes over the international waters of the Baltic Sea in a timely manner.”
The statement added: “The aircraft of foreign powers were escorted without interruption, a tangible distance from the borders of the Russian Federation by Russian electronic means of control, and in order to intercept the targets, the Su-27 fighters of the Baltic Air Force took off.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the U.S. bombers and interceptor aircraft that were intercepted were carrying out flights over the Baltic Sea as part of the “Baltops 2020” exercises for NATO.
The ministry stressed that the Su-27 fighters prevented any violation of the borders of the Russian state, noting that Russian aircraft crews carried out their flights in full accordance with international rules for the use of airspace.
