La base aérea siria que fue atacada por el ejército de Estados Unidos esta madrugada todavía está en funcionamiento, con aviones de guerra y bombarderos pertenecientes a la Fuerza Aérea Árabe Siria (SYAAF) despegando y aterrizando en la instalación.

Se mostraron imágenes de los bombarderos Sukhoi Su-22 fabricados en Rusia en la base aérea de Shayrat, situada en la provincia de Homs. La base aérea fue atacada con 59 misiles crucero tomahawk, aunque algunas fuentes han declarado que alrededor de la mitad de los misiles fueron derribados por las defensas aéreas rusas y sirias.

El ataque ha sido criticado por algunos comentaristas políticos, ya que en última instancia beneficia a los opositores del Ejército Árabe Sirio (EAS), incluyendo a ISIS y otros grupos que los propios EEUU declaran como terroristas.

Además, el ataque se llevó a cabo sin pruebas claras que indicaran que las fuerzas progubernamentales estuvieran detrás del reciente ataque químico en la Gobernación de Idlib. Tras el incidente, el Presidente Trump culpó a la política exterior de Obama por el último ataque químico en Siria.
