Horas después de la liberación de la antigua ciudad en pleno desierto de Palmira, unidades del Ejército Árabe Sirio (EAS) respaldadas por la Fuerza Aérea Rusa asaltaron la base aérea adyacente al este de la ciudad.

Después de horas de intensos enfrentamientos, las fuerzas gubernamentales lograron asegurar el aeropuerto y gran parte de la región de los huertos al sur de la ciudad abriendo camino para el próximo asalto a los Silos de Palmira, que tiene como objetivo salvaguardar los flancos orientales de la ciudad.

No se sabe si las operaciones que se llevan a cabo en esta región del país devastada por la guerra se limitarán a establecer una zona de amortiguación alrededor de la ciudad y asegurar los pozos de petróleo circundantes o extender hasta levantar el asedio de la devastada ciudad de Deir Ezor donde la Guardia Republicana y las fuerzas tribales aliadas han logrado defenderse valientemente de cientos de ataques de ISIS en la ciudad del Éufrates durante años.
