The United States admitted on Wednesday that recruiting Syrian opposition forces to combat ISIS jihadis has proved a ‘challenge’, but still ‘too soon to give up the effort’.
U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the U.S has enough training sites but no enough trainees.
The United States seek to establish a ‘moderate’ rebel forces that can fight ISIS as well as the Syrian government troops, within its ongoing quest to isolate the western-backed rebels from more hardline factions fighting Syria’s Assad.
Last year, the Congress has authorized $500 million for the Equip-and-Train program, especially designed for ‘moderate’ Syrian opposition.
