BEIRUT (4:50 P.M.) – There are multiple dead, including children, and reports of at least three U.S. Marines injured or possibly killed, after two explosions close in time to one another rocked entry points at Kabul international airport as evacuations continued to be underway Thursday. Unconfirmed local reports say there are at least 13 dead.
“An ISIS suicide bomber was responsible for the explosion, a U.S. official and a person familiar with the situation told POLITICO,” according to the publication.
Blast at Kabul airport. Feeds show smoke billowing from near the east gate. At least 13 reported dead including kids; thinking about all those images of the hundreds who’ve been waiting, crammed outside the walls. pic.twitter.com/28UfYu6Jrh

“The attack occurred just outside Abbey gate, where U.S. personnel until recently welcomed American citizens to board evacuation flights, according to four sources with knowledge of the situation,” Politico describes further.
“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby stated. “We will provide additional details when we can.”
Reported to be the moment of the first explosion:
Wednesday night and earlier in the day Thursday U.S. defense and intelligence officials began reportedly warning the Biden administration of a heightened terrorist threat from the Islamic State in Afghanistan.
The explosions are currently being described as a “complex suicide attack” by U.S. officials and media correspondents covering the rapidly unfolding events.
