DAMASCUS, SYRIA (07:40 PM) – The elite forces of the Syrian rebel organisation calling itself the Free Syrian Army (FSA) has released pictures of recent gains made against Kurdish forces in the north Syrian district of Afrin.
The Al-Hamza Group, an elite armed force within the FSA, captured the towns of Al-Darwisha, Hajikanali Fouqani and Hajikanali Tahtani in western Afrin on Sunday, after heavy clashes with forces of the mostly Kurdish force known as the People’s Protection Units (YPG).
During the offensive, the Turkish-backed militants killed at least five Kurdish fighters, as well as capturing one female YPG soldier alive. The captive is shown in the released pictures as well.
The FSA is a self-professed moderate rebel organisation, which in the past years had nearly vanished into irrelevance in the Syrian conflict. Following the Turkish offensive into Afrin however, the group has received significantly boosted support from Ankara.
