BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:05 P.M.) – The Kurdish-led “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF) launched a surprise attack against the Turkish-backed rebels in the northern Aleppo countryside on Monday, seizing the town of Ma’reen near the Bab Al-Salamiyah crossing into Turkey.
However, the Kurdish forces would only control the town for a few hours, as the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and their allies launched a counter-attack on Monday evening.
The Free Syrian Army needed to recapture the town of Ma’reen because of its proximity to the border-city of ‘Azaz, which is also their main stronghold in northern Aleppo.
Should the rebel forces lose ‘Azaz to the Kurdish forces, it would be a catastrophic defeat for them in northern Syria and would likely result in another Turkish Army operation to recover this city.
