The Turkish Army has built new military bases along their border with Syria’s Aleppo Governorate amid their recent threats to launch fresh operations against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“The Turkish Army is engaged in setting up new military bases near Syria’s border as it prepares to launch a new offensive,” the Kurdish-language Hawar News Agency reported, citing sources as saying on Friday.

It noted that the Turkish Army has turned the houses of civilians in the villages of Kouk Tappa and Upper Ashmeh into military bases; this puts their armed forces within striking distance of western Kobani in northern Aleppo.

“The Turkish Army is also constructing trenches in the surrounding areas of the villages,” the Hawar News said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly vowed to launch a military operation expel the SDF and People’s Protection Units (YPG) east of the Euphrates River.

However, despite these threats, the Turkish military is still confined to the northwestern part of the country due to the U.S.’ ongoing presence in the Aleppo, Al-Raqqa, Al-Hasakah, and Deir Ezzor governorates.

Erdogan has called on the U.S. to stop aiding the SDF, but the latter claims they are working with these groups to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh).
