BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:35 A.M.) – On Saturday, the Turkish Army and Syrian proxy militias under its command seized some nineteen villages and towns from Kurdish forces in Afrin as part of their ongoing ‘Olive Branch’ operation across the region.
The advance has brought Turkey-led forces to within one kilometer of Afrin’s regional capital – the city of Afrin – from the northern direction (Sharan axis) and within 8 kilometers from the southern direction (Jandaris axis).
The lightening advance of the Turkish Army and pro-Ankara militias has been made under the cover of heavy bombardment from Turkish warplanes which have carried out both tactical and interdiction airstrikes.
Overall, the assault by pro-Ankara forces to capture Afrin now seems imminent given their general proximity to the city. At the same time it can be expected that they will also continue their attack to outflank the regional capital from the eastern direction and cut communication lines running into the it from government-controlled territory in Aleppo province.
