Following Turkey’s deal to open a military base in Qatar, it is now on the cusps of securing a second base deal, this time in Somalia. The purpose of the Turkish military presence is allegedly to assist Somalia in its fight against the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
A military source reported to Turkey’s Daily Sabah that the purpose of the base is to train up to 1,500 Somalian troops to fight the terrorist organization.
Al-Shabaab control large swathes of the impoverished country and implements its radical interpretation of Islam through a puritanical version of Sharia Law.
The terrorist group were responsible for the infamous Westgate shopping mall attack in 2013 that occurred in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, killing 63 innocent people.
