BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:20 P.M.) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a joint press conference after bilateral talks in Helsinki on Monday.
Putin and Trump discussed a range of international issues and bilateral relations, in particular, the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections, Syria, Ukraine, NATO and US economic sanctions.
The US President also congratulated his counterpart over hosting the “best ever” World Cup.
“On a wide range of critical issues for both our countries, we had direct, open, deeply-productive dialogue, it went very well. Before I begin I want to thank President Niinisto of Finland for hosting today’s summit. President Putin and I were saying how lovely it was and what a great job they did. I also want to congratulate Russia and President Putin for having done such an excellent job in hosting the World Cup, it was really one of the best ever and your team also did very well,” the US President said.
Putin thanked Trump for the comments and then gave a football to the US President, adding that its the US’ turn to host the World Cup in 2026.
“Mr. President said that we successfully held the World Cup. And regarding the ball… I am giving this ball to Mr. President. The ball is in your court now. Moreover, USA will host the 2026 World Cup,” Putin stated.
This is the third meeting between Putin and Trump; the leaders’ first meeting was in July 2017 on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg and in November they met at the APEC summit in Da Nang, Vietnam.
