BEIRUT (8:05 P.M.) – Afghanistan’s new Taliban government has appointed former Guantanamo detainee mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir as it’s acting defense minister, according to Qatari based Al Jazeera news channel on Tuesday, subsequently reported in Reuters. He was among the first senior Taliban commanders to enter Kabul last week as the group overran the capital amid the U.S. troop exit, and after U.S.-trained national forces largely fled. Until being named as Defense Minister, Qayyum was deputy to the Taliban’s commander-in-chief, Mullah Yaqoob. BEIRUT (5:10 P.M.) – The Taliban has rejected proposals from the U.S. and its Western allies to extend evacuations from Kabul international airport past August 31. The deadline was previously set by U.S. President Joe Biden as the last day American troops would be present inside Afghanistan. BEIRUT (5:50 A.M.) – On Sunday a Pentagon spokesman announced that an enemy drone had been shot down over eastern Syria as it flew near the vicinity of American troops. BEIRUT (1:15 A.M.) – Late into the overnight hours Israeli warplanes are pummeling the Gaza Strip, following accusations that Hamas deployed incendiary balloons into southern Israel earlier on Monday, which reportedly caused up to a dozen fires.
