France and Great Britain fear a Libyan scenario in Syria too, which means transferring diplomatic influence from the Franco-Anglo-American axis to a Mediterranean axis, externally coordinated by an US – Russia agreement.
But this change became necessary after new requirements related to the need of control and eradicate the infiltration of terrorists within the European Union borders became truth.
Paris and London will not willingly give up diplomatic leadership over Syria, given their efforts to bring down the “Sword of Damocles” hanging over their heads, after the support offered in the past to rebels and numerous fighters in Syria against Assad. It remains, however, the problem of foreign fighters blocked in the Middle East, using their families to force returning in their origin countries, but Governments keep denying they coming back home.
Many of them have expressed willingness to cooperate with Western authorities in order serve their sentences in their home lands, but authorities have disconsidered any negotiation in this regard. Thus, European fighters have no alternative but to die in Syrian or Iraqi prisons or to cooperate with the Damascus intelligence services in order to combat the Islamic State forces.
In a quick analysis, one can see that something has definitely changed in the European Foreign Policy – as a possible Brexit backlash too – thus questioning geopolitical assets considered by now unnegotiable.
Moreover, parallel diplomacy strategies are increasingly and insidiously emerging inside an Alliance that has currently lost any reference points. In this regard a disinformation mass media campaign was triggered in order to contaminate and discredit any possible role of Italy in designing a political solution for Syria.
According to italophile local sources in the Middle East, there was no visit between the Italian intelligence chief – Gen. Alberto Manenti and Syrian officials last weekend, as falsely reported by the Beirut-based newspaper Assafir and the Gulf News portal. The same sources add that this campaign was puppeted from abroad, thus targeting a communication channel between Rome and Damascus.
In fact, these Syrian channels – with Berlin and Brussels too – were never completely interrupted and, in some way, they kept functioning all this time especially in managing the migration crisis, the European fighters and former Syrians rebels and Daech fighters’ European infiltration, in their attempt to flee the war zone.
But this information was twisted, manipulated and taken to the extreme, in order to almost criminalize and stop at bay Italy’s any possible attempt of “intrusion” in something that, perhaps, may be an already existing negotiation process controlled by other States.
In other words, Rome’s interest in the Syrian issue was not enjoyed, a case in which France and Britain want the exclusive European decision-making, although Italy is one of the European countries with most consequences provoked by the migration exodus, as a transit country and a “rescue and welcome shore.”
