As the battle for Tabqa Airbase intensifies, the Syrian Arab Army has reinforced their embattled forces with highly-trained soldiers from their newly formed 124th Brigade of the Republican Guard.

Two transport planes arrived at the base with the 124 Brigade soldiers, while another plane carried wounded and dead back to Tishreen Hospital.

According to sources close to Al-Masdar News, 14 soldiers have been killed and another 29 have been wounded over the last 4 days at Tabqa Airbase.

The 124th Brigade was formed as a specialized force in anti-insurgency combat. Located as a reserve force in the Syrian coastal province of Tartous, the 124th is being used for the first in the Syrian Conflict.

Due to the scarcity of information regarding this brigade, not much is known about their training and command structure. However, sources have confirmed that the majority of these soldiers are former officers and members of the Syrian Arab Army Special Forces.

With the firefights continuing at Tabqa Airbase,  the Syrian Arab Army looks to lift the siege and secure the area around the base.
