Around noon today, Islamist rebel fighters launched a major offensive from Morek and Ashtan towards the government stronghold of Ma’an in northern Hama.
The offensive was carried out exclusively by Jund al-Aqsa (Syrian al-Qaeda group); however, it was fully repelled by the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) 87th Brigade of the 17th Division.
2 Islamist vehicles manned with machine guns were destroyed in the attack while approximately 15 Islamist fighters were killed many of whom still lie slain on the battlefield as the fields on the Morek-Ashtan-Ma’an axis have been transformed into no man’s land.
According to an al-Masdar source based in Hama, no airstrikes were called in as the SAA was able to rely upon its ground troops, tanks, artillery and MLRS rocket launchers.
Unfortunately for the armed Syrian Opposition, rebel forces were thus unable to gain any ground in the Hama governorate today.
This attack marks renewed clashes in northern Hama which has otherwise been relatively quiet since Islamist rebels captured Morek in November, 2015.
