BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:05 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a powerful counter-offensive in the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus on Tuesday, targeting the strategic town of Hazrama that has been the primary focus for both the government and Islamist rebels these last few days.
Led by the 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard, the Syrian Arab Army stormed Hazrama once again after withdrawing from the town on Monday due to a heavy assault by Jaysh Al-Islam and Faylaq Al-Rahman.
With the momentum on their side, the Syrian Arab Army broke-through Jaysh Al-Islam’s main line of defense at Hazrama and seized the town’s roundabout, cemetery, water storage tower, and mail depot.
As a result of today’s counter-offensive, the Syrian Arab Army managed to seize more than 50 percent of Hazrama, leaving Jaysh Al-Islam and Faylaq Al-Rahman in serious trouble if they are unable to forestall the velocity of this attack.
According to an Al-Masdar field correspondent in Damascus, intense clashes are still ongoing inside of Hazrama town, as the Syrian Arab Army attempts to seize the remaining points under Islamist control in the town.
