The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a major offensive in southwest Deir Ezzor on Monday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses at the Panorama Orchards area of the city.
ISIS began their assault by launching a VBIED (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) at the Syrian Arab Army’s checkpoint outside the Panorama Orchards; this terrorist attack was foiled before it could reach its intended destination.
Following the failed VBIED attack, ISIS stormed the outskirts of the Panorama Orchards, resulting in a fierce battle with the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Artillery Brigade of the 17th Reserve Division.
Luckily, the Syrian Arab Army, with help from the Russian Air Force, repelled this major offensive after a four hour long battle with the Islamic State terrorists in southwest Deir Ezzor.
The Russian Air Force played a pivotal role in defeating the Islamic State militants on Monday, as they destroyed several terrorist vehicles that were attempting to reinforce their comrades in southwest Panorama and several other areas, including the Deir Ezzor Aibase, Al-Baghilyah, Jabal Thardeh, and Al-Jafraa.
In addition to repelling ISIS at the Panorama area, the Syrian Armed Forces foiled the terrorist group’s attempt to infiltrate their positions at Tal Al-Rawad in northern Deir Ezzor.
Local sources in Deir Ezzor confirmed to Al-Masdar News that Major General Issam Zahreddine is not in the hospital nor is he seriously wounded – he was pictured with his soldiers on Monday (see below).
