DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:50 P.M.) – Thousands of soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army’s Republican Guard poured into the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus on Monday night to participate in what is being dubbed as the largest military operation against Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam).
According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army is preparing to launch a massive offensive that will target the Jaysh Al-Islam strongholds of Harasta and Douma, which are also linked to the strategic Homs-Damascus Highway.
The military source added that this military operation will have over 8,000 Syrian Arab Army soldiers participating in the battle, with another 3,000-4,000 militia backing up their forces attempting to advance west towards the Jaysh Al-Islam stronghold of Douma.
While the Syrian Armed Forces prepare for this massive offensive, the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard, alongside the Palstine Libeation Army (Palestinian wing of the Syrian Army), continued their advance inside of Al-Mayda’ani, capturing more than 70 percent of the town after a fierce battle on Tuesday morning.
The East Ghouta was once considered the most important stronghold in the rural Damascus region for the Syrian opposition forces; however, since losing the key town of Deir ‘Assafir, the Islamist fortifications have quickly crumbled, as internal clashes plague their defense of the region.
