The Syrian Armed Forces continued their march towards the Tabaqa Military Airport on Wednesday after liberating much of the Salamiyah-Raqqa Highway earlier this week.
Led by the Syrian Arab Army’s 555th Regiment of the 4th Mechanized Division and Desert Hawks, the Syrian Armed Forces liberated the last 5 km of highway that leads up to the Rasafeh Crossroad in western Raqqa.
As a result of this advance, the Syrian Armed Forces are now within 30 km of the Tabaqa Military Airport and less than 100 km away from the provincial capital of the Raqqa Governorate.
Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) are engaged in a violent battle at this key crossroad in western Raqqa; no gains have been reported.
ISIS attempted to repel the attack by launching a VBIED towards the Syrian Marines; this assault injured as many as ten soldiers after the suicide bomber detonated his explosives near the Rasafeh Crossroad.
In the coming hours, the Syrian Armed Forces will likely seize this imperative crossroad, leaving them within striking distance of the Tabaqa Military Airport for the first time in 22 months.
