The Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division – backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Liwaa Al-Quds (Palestinian paramilitary) – have launched a wide-scale offensive in northern Aleppo to ease the pressure applied by the extremist rebels on the predominately Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud.

According to an Al-Masdar correspondent in Damascus City, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies have already liberated the Handarat factories located inside the Handarat Refugee Camp in northern Aleppo.

Most of the fighting is taking place inside the aforementioned camp; however, the goal behind this offensive is to clear much of this rebel controlled area and stop Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) from advancing south towards the Sheikh Maqsoud District.

Recently, Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) attacked the Sheikh Maqsoud District in an attempt to punish the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for capturing territory in northern Aleppo.

As a result of this attack, more than 25 civilians have been killed by indiscriminate rebel shelling in Sheikh Maqsoud.
